We are thrilled to announce that CoMPaSS-NMD has been featured in a major spotlight article in the latest issue of Projects Magazine, published by research dissemination agency Insight Media.

The feature, titled “COMPASS-NMD: Structuring uncertainty in neuromuscular disease,” explores how our Horizon Europe-funded consortium is redefining the diagnostic and clinical landscape for patients living with hereditary neuromuscular disorders (NMDs).

Confronting the “Diagnostic Odyssey”

For many patients, the most grueling part of living with an NMD is the profound uncertainty. Despite the rise of genetic testing, the majority of patients still lack a clear diagnosis, and the disease pathways remain highly heterogeneous.

As our Project Coordinator Rossella Tupler (University of Modena and Reggio Emilia) explains in the article, DNA is only one piece of the puzzle:

“From my experience, having seen thousands of patients, I realised that it is very important to classify what we call the phenotype, that is, the way the disease presents… crucial first for classification and second for prediction.”

Integrating Data for Structured Intelligence

The article highlights CoMPaSS-NMD’s pioneering approach to “deep phenotyping”—the process of standardizing detailed clinical observations using a 200+ item Structured Clinical Report Form.

By combining this deep clinical description with three other critical pillars—whole-genome analysis, muscle MRI, and muscle histology—the project is creating a cohesive, multimodal dataset. At the heart of this digital infrastructure is ATLAS, our centralized repository where machine learning algorithms are trained to find hidden patterns and stratify patients into highly specific, clinically meaningful groups.

This integrated framework aims to:

  • Accelerate Diagnosis: Helping clinicians quickly classify and understand new cases.

  • Forecast Progression: Providing patients and families with clearer answers about how their condition will evolve.

  • Unlock Better Therapies: Allowing pharmaceutical partners to design targeted clinical trials with highly homogeneous patient groups.

What’s Next?

CoMPaSS-NMD has entered its critical validation phase, actively recruiting a cohort of 500 undiagnosed patients to test and refine the ATLAS AI models. Ultimately, our long-term vision is to establish ATLAS as a permanent, open-access European resource—a centralized “neuromuscular library” to assist clinicians across the continent.
